Indigenous to México and Central America, later taken by settlers, known as Cuetlaxochitl in Nahuatl. The “Nochebuena” name traced to early Franciscan friars who arrived from Spain in the 16th century. Spaniards also called it “Scarlet Cloth.” Other names include: “Santa Catarina” in 🇲🇽, “Estrella Federal, ” or “Federal Star” in 🇦🇷 and “Penacho de Incan, ” or “Headdress” in 🇵🇪
