Meet Famous Tejana, teacher turned journalist 📰 turned civil rights leader ✊🏽, Jovita Idár.⠀ ⠀ Born in 1885 in Laredo, Tejas, Jovita’s work and accomplishments empowered Mujeres/Tejanos to move forward.⠀ ⠀ What makes Jovita a Mujer Poderosa? ⠀ ✨1903 became a teacher⠀ ✨1911 founded the FIRST political convention by and for Latinos in 🇺🇸 La Liga Femenil Mexicanista – a social, cultural, political, and charitable organization providing free clothes food, and education ✨1914 crossed the border to join the nursing unit, La Cruz Blanca, to help care for wounded soldiers during the Mexican Revolution⠀ ✨1914 joined the newspaper El Progreso and covered the many injustices Mexicans faced in the border including searing reports on lynchings of immigrants perpetrated by the Texas Rangers⠀ ✨1916 bought her own printing press for $1k and created her own newspaper, Evolucion (can we say boss?!) ⠀ ✨1921 moved to San Antonio to help undocumented workers obtain naturalization papers⠀ ✨Created a free nursery school and tutored young children⠀ ⠀ “Women recognize their rights, proudly raise their chins, and face the struggle.
