Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl Legend

Why Romeo and Juliet when we have Popocatépetl y Iztaccíhuatl. The story of princess Iztaccíhuatl y warrior Popocatépetl originates from 🇲🇽 and is everlasting. Long 📖 but worth it: Legend has it that the ruler of the Tlaxcala people in 🇲🇽 went to war against the Aztecs for the freedom of his people. He had a beautiful daughter, Princess Iztaccíhuatl, who had fallen in love with the tribe’s highest ranking warrior, Popocatepetl. When Popocatepetl asked for her hand in marriage the ruler offered it gladly, as long as Popocatepetl came back victoriously from war. While Popocatepetl was away at war, one of Iztaccíhuatl’s jealous admirers, Citlaltepetl, told her that Popocatepetl had been killed in war. 💔, Iztaccíhuatl died of sadness. Upon returning from battle, Popocatepetl learned of her death and decided to build her a tomb and lay her lifeless body on top, where he knelt beside her with a smoking torch watching over her. Popocatepetl stayed by her side until he too died. Centuries passed and they were covered with snow and earth until becaming the volcanoes they are today, with Itza the shape of a reclining mujer and Popo, a kneeling hombre. To this day it is said that the still active volcano, Popocatepetl, erupts occasionally for his ❤️.
