Sylvia was born in the Bronx, NY to a Venezuelan Venezuela 🇻🇪 mother and Puerto Rican 🇵🇷 father. After the tragic death of her mother and then abandoned by her father Sylivia was left with her abuela.⠀ ⠀ Although facing several challenges in her personal life Syliva was committed in her fight for equality across several organizations: 👉🏽 LGBTQ+ Rights (She is considered one of the pivotal figures who ensured the “T” in LGBTQ was included)⠀ 👉🏽 Black Rights via the Black Panther Movement & Black Liberation Movement⠀ 👉🏽 Latino Rights via the Young Lords ⠀ 👉🏽 Women’s Rights Advocacy ⠀ 👉🏽 Homeless Fair Rights⠀ ⠀ Her commitment and dedication pushed the New York City Gay Rights Bill and the Stonewall riots.⠀ ⠀ Today Sylvia’s legacy continues and lives on through the Sylvia Rivera Law Project which works to guarantee that all people are free to self-determine their gender identity and expression, regardless of income or race, and without facing harassment, discrimination, or violence. ⠀
