Las Mariposas Legacy

🇩🇴🇩🇴🇩🇴Hermanas; Patria, Minerva, María Teresa also known as “Las Mariposas” 🦋 were the definition of feminist resistance against oppression in the 1950’s. Each hermana fought against the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo in the Dominican Republic. Often facing harassment, jail time, and threats they continued to fight 💪🏾for justice. Patria: ”We cannot allow our children to grow up in this corrupt and tyrannical regime. We have to fight against it, and I am willing to give up everything, even my life if necessary. Sadly they were assassinated in 1960 by order of Rafael Trujillo. Fast forward to 1999, in the sisters’ honor, the United Nations General Assembly designated 11/25 the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
