Fritos Origin Story

Did you know the initial recipe for Fritos originated from 🇲🇽? Read more 👩🏽‍🏫 below: In San Anotonio, TX, Charles Elmer Doolin was searching for a tortilla chip alternative to sell in his convenient store. From here there are two versions of the story: Story 1: While at a gas station/convenience store Dooling came across 🇲🇽 Gustavo Olguin making corn chips out of masa, frying them, and selling them in little bags as fried corn chips known as fritos or “little fried things” a popular beach snack from 🇲🇽. Story 2: In 1932 Gustavo Olguin ran an ad in the San Antonio Express saying: “CORN chips business for sale, a new food product, making good money. Must sacrifice.” Despite the stories consistency Doolin was impressed by the fritos, purchased the patent, recipe and 14 customers from Gustavo for $100 and with the help of his mother began perfecting the recipe. After launching the product into stores Doolin opened the Casa de Frito (Mexican) restaurant in Disneyland in 1955, and later one in Dallas. In 1961 The Frito Company merged with H.W. Lay & Co. to become Frito-Lay. Frito-Lay then went on to develop more products including Cheetos and Doritos. Source: NPR, TEXAS MONTHLY
