Recognizing Indigenous Women

Instead of recognizing #ColumbusDay 🙅🏽‍♀️we’ve opted to recognize Mujeres Indigenas who’ve 💪🏾fought oppression, demanded equality and risked their lives doing so all week long.⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ First Powerful Woman:⠀ 🇲🇽 Comandanta Ramona, 1959 – January 6, 2006, the most recognized female Zapatista figure, was an officer of the EZLN (Zapatista Army of National Liberation) She served as a symbol of equality and dignity for indigenous and impoverished women, particularly the indigenous people of Chiapas. “Our hope is that one day our situation will change, that we woman will be treated with respect, justice and democracy.”⠀ ⠀
