Leona Vicario’s Legacy

🇲🇽 Independence could not happen without a MUJER PODEROSA! One of the most prominent mujeres in 🇲🇽’s War for Independence was Leona Vicario, regarded as the “Distinguished and Beloved Mother of the Homeland.” Leona joined forces with Los Guadalupes, a secret society receiving and distributing insurgent correspondence fighting against Spanish rule. She used her personal wealth to protected fugitives, transferred money, purchased arms (cannons, guns) and medicine. She was arrested while pregnant, escaped, and forced to give birth in a cave. Throughout Mexico 🇲🇽 she is recognized in statues, street names and being featured on a peso. Leona luchaba por los ideales de un Mexico justo, inclusivo y solidario. ¡Una mujer poderosa!
