✨Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz was LA PODEROSA LATINA of the 17th century. Juana Inés was a self-taught scholar & acclaimed writer during a time when mujeres were rarely educated & restricted to attend university. At the age of 8, Juana Inés composed her first poem & by her teens, she had studied Greek logic, Latin & learned the Aztec language of Nahuatl. She prioritized her education & became a nun to focus on worship & to continue her studies at peace. Her room was filled w/ over 4,000 books, scientific instruments & maps. She is considered to be 🇲🇽’s first feminist, one of the greatest Latin American poets, & some say, North America’s first lesbian writer falling deeply in love w/ Virreina, María Luisa Manrique de Lara of Spain. Sadly she passed at 44 in 1695. Her literary piece entitled ‘Hombres Necios’ is famously recognized & she is pictured on the 200 🇲🇽 bill.
