Pura Belpré became the first Puerto Rican 🇵🇷 librarian in New York’s public library system in 1921. She could not find any children’s books in Spanish, so she wrote them herself! 🙌🏽 In the 1930s Belpré traveled all over New York, from the Bronx to LES, telling stories with puppets in Spanish and English. Pura said her folktales from her helped immigrant children feel at home. ❤️ Every year, the American Library Association grants an award in Belpré’s name de ella. Which recognizes books for kids and young adults by Latino writers and illustrators. Belpré had an extraordinary career as a story teller, activist, librarian, folklorist and even as a puppeteer! A true icon and #LatinaPowerful ✊🏽
