Today Google Doodle celebrates Puerto Rican 🇵🇷civil rights activist and mother, Felicitas Mendez. Alongside her husband Gonzalo (swipe for photo), Felicitas fought against public school segregation—almost a decade before Brown v. Board of Education after witnessing the discrimination faced by her own daughter. “No one knows about Mendez vs Westminster, how five families fought to end segregation in California. When we all decided to fight, it was not only for you but for all the children.” – Felicitas told her daughter, Sylvia. Today Felicitas legacy lives on through Sylvia who at the time of the trial was just 8 years old but recalls vividly the discrimination she faced. Tap for Audio 🔊of Sylvia sharing a bit of her story.
