Lucha Reyes: Afro-Peruvian Icon

🇵🇪 Known as the Peruvian Billie Holiday, La Morena de Oro del Peru, 👑 Lucha Reyes. Lucha is one of 🇵🇪’s most famous Afro- Peruvian singers & a symbol of Peruvian nationalism. Born on July 19, 1936 in Lima’s Rímac district into a poor family with 15 siblings. In order to support herself and her family she began selling newspapers, washing clothes, and working long hours in restaurant kitchens, later to be discovered while signing 🎤at El Sentir de los Barrios, a Creole club. Throughout her career, Lucha helped popularize 🎶 la Música Criolla, a blend of Creole music with Afro-Peruvian and Andean musical traditions that express the feelings of everyday people.
