A gothic tale. A cultural moment. A dream 25 years in the making.

This November, the legendary Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro brings his most personal passion project to life: Frankenstein. The Netflix original stars Oscar Isaac, a proud Guatemalan-Cuban American, as Dr. Victor Frankenstein and Mia Goth as Elizabeth, in what’s expected to be a haunting and poetic reimagining of Mary Shelley’s classic.

Del Toro revealed during Netflix’s Tudum event that he’s been working toward this film for over two decades.

I wanted to make this film before I even had a camera,” he shared. “And I’ve been actively pursuing it for 25 years.”

Best known for visionary films like Pan’s Labyrinth, The Shape of Water, and Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, the three-time Oscar winner is once again blending horror and heart, a trademark of his masterful storytelling. This latest adaptation of Frankenstein promises to explore what makes us human, what it means to be “monstrous,” and how love and grief can blur those lines.

With a leading Latino cast and a Mexican director at the helm, and at a time when Latino representation in genre storytelling still lags, Frankenstein feels like a bold and long-awaited answer.

The film drops this November on Netflix just in time for cozy, spooky nights.
