Yma Sumac: The Peruvian Songbird

🇵🇪 When we think of vintage beauty let’s also remember iconic Latinas like Zoila Augusta Emperatriz Chávarri del Castillo also known as Yma Sumac of Cajamarca, Peru. Known for her 5 octave vocal range, she was nicknamed “The Peruvian Songbird.” Around the age of 9 she could be seen atop the High Andes singing ancient Peruvian folkloric songs. In 1946 she moved to NYC to become the highest selling artist for Capitol Records by the 1950’s. She is also believed to be an Incan princess, a direct descendant from Atahualpa, the last Incan emperor. Talk about boss 💪🏽 While false media reports claimed her real name was “Amy Camus,” a Jewish girl from Brooklyn (🧐hmmm no) She acted in films, stage shows, and performed late into the 1990s receiving worldwide recognition and awarded a ⭐️ on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
